Selah: The Eternal Song is a project devoted to the Biblical book of Psalms. It will feature selected
passages from each chapter of the Psalms rendered in decorative calligraphic text, each chapter
accompanied by an illustrative painting or drawing relating to the theme of the chapter.

This project was birthed by a passion which began over a decade ago. In the summer of 1993 I read a
tiny book called
31 Days of Wisdom and Praise, containing daily readings from the books of Psalms and
Proverbs, designed to guide the reader through each of the books in their entirety during the course of a
month. I enjoyed the readings immensely and finished the book in about a week. The reading of the
Psalms and Proverbs sparked a newfound love for those books, especially the Psalms, which has been a
source of much solace and hope.

My inspiration for this book was also due to the thirty year-long work of James S. Freemantle, who
painstakingly penned the Psalms by hand in elegant calligraphy accompanied by colorful floral and nature
designs. His project was intended to be a book presented as a gift to his beloved wife Clara. Sadly, he
died before completing the project, but he did complete an impressive compilation of the Psalms
rendered in his meticulous handiwork. Year after his passing, his son printed the work to be enjoyed by
generations to come.

The Psalms have been used in worship and liturgy for centuries, as far back as the ancient Jews during
the time of King David. Many churches use what is called a Psalter, which is a collection of the Psalms set
to music. Today, the text of the Psalms is used in many recordings by the Hosanna! Music record label,
many of whose songs have been adopted for worship by churches worldwide.

Since the Psalms is a very lengthy book (comprised of 150 chapters, some of which are very
lengthy on their own), the release date for this project is yet undetermined. I want to take time to
devote the care that the subject matter deserves.

ABOUT THE TITLE

"Selah" is a Hebrew word which appears numerous times throughout the book of Psalms. While its
exact meaning is unclear, most scholars agree it likely means "stop and listen". As such, it is an
instruction on how the psalm is to be read or sung, instructing those who deliver it to pause and
reflect on the truths of the words of the psalm.

The Object of the psalms of Scripture is the eternal God of the Bible; the God of Abraham, Moses,
David, Peter, and Paul. Since the creation of men and angels, songs and anthems have been sung in
His name, and so it will be throughout all eternity by those who adore Him.
